Goals. The aim of this network is to increase the contribution of the arts to bioethics. We believe that the arts enrich bioethical discourse and open up new creative approaches on bioethical issues. Bioethical issues such as cloning and genetic engineering have been the subject of theatre, drama, dance, books and movies for a long time. An artistic exploration of these issues can capture and contribute to the public imagination in powerful ways. Fiction, drama, and visual expressions help to reframe and conceptualize ethical issues. This network stimulates artistic explorations into culture and bioethics through the initiation of interdisciplinary dialogue between the textual and the non-textual. The network has the following aims:

  • To promote engagement and dialogue between artists and non-artists
  • To facilitate ways of artistic exploration into bioethical issues or themes
  • To encourage the publication of scholarly articles on arts-bioethics issues

Activity of the Arts & Bioethics Network

Members of the Arts and Bioethics Network met, gave presentations, and supported exhibitions and performances at the following WCB meetings:

  • Rijeka, 2008 - The Art of Bioethics Exhibition, an Arts Bioethics Performance, a movie, and several academic papers.
  • Singapore, 2020
  • Rotterdam, 2012
  • Edinburg, 2016 - Arts and Ethics program, presentations, and performances, and Meeting  of the Edinburgh Arts & Ethics Research Group on ‘The Transformative Potential of the Arts’
  • Johannesburg, 2026 – Photography Exhibition on ‘disturbing and comforting roles of art’.
